Volunteer Opportunities

We have many volunteer opportunities from our construction sites, ReStores, events, specialty committees and many places in between.

Our volunteers come from all backgrounds and experiences, from first-timers, experienced professionals, large groups, small groups, and individuals to faith ministries, school groups, corporate partners and local businesses. We invite anyone who shares our mission-focus and who is dedicated to filling these important roles to join us for a day, a week, every month, or more!

Habitat for Humanity volunteers continuously help families in our local communities build a decent and affordable place to call home.

Construction

Wear your favorite tool belt or use one of ours and join us on a construction site near you. We are currently building in both New London and Windham counties and can use help on all stages of the building process. From foundations to roofing, from windows to flooring and everything in between. We will train you if you are new to a construction site, and we encourage you to offer skilled support if you are experienced in a trade.

Helping with the construction process means helping a Habitat homeowner get one step closer to living in their own safe, stable and affordable home. Be a part of this mission and hammer some nails with us this week.

ReStore

Our ReStore locations are a place to put your talents to work. From customer service to furniture repair, Habitat ReStores offer many retail volunteer opportunities. By giving your time, you help ReStore do more to support building projects that benefit families in our communities.

Volunteers provide support to Habitat ReStores in a wide variety of ways. ReStores strive to keep operating costs as low as possible to maximize funding that goes directly to benefit the mission. Volunteers are one of the ways that we ensure the ReStore experience is meaningful to donors and shoppers alike.

There are many ways to volunteer at Habitat ReStore:

  • Customer service
  • Stocking store shelves
  • Unloading trucks
  • Pricing inventory
  • Organizing the ReStore and the warehouse
  • Cashier
  • Sales-floor associate
  • Merchandiser

Faith Communities

Since our beginning in 1976, Habitat has been built on a foundation of faith. Our mission is to build safe, affordable housing with people in the United States and around the world, and that comes from a desire to put God’s love into action.

No experience is necessary to volunteer, and all faith groups are welcome. We will teach you everything you need to know and there are a variety of tasks both indoors and outdoors to participate in that require all levels of skill and ability. We also offer tailored experiences to fit your group such as a focus for students, singles or small groups.

We are God’s hands and feet, here to serve others and show them His love. The tangible experiences that Habitat provides allow you to engage those around you, live your faith and offer a unique opportunity to love your neighbor. You’ll also have the opportunity to work alongside future Habitat homeowners.

Non-Proselytizing Policy: We are a nonprofit Christian housing organization open to people of all faiths or beliefs. Habitat for Humanity and its affiliate organizations will not proselytize. Nor will Habitat work with entities or individuals who insist on proselytizing as part of their work with Habitat. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must adhere to or convert to a particular faith or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

Committees

Finance Committee – The finance committee works to review the financials for the organization. A volunteer for this committee should have a background in finance. The committee meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10 am at the office in New London.

Community Engagement Committee – Volunteers participate in affiliate and community events. Meetings (not required) are generally held at the Habitat for Humanity office in New London once a month on a Thursday at 1 pm. Tasks are delegated to committee members to accomplish between meetings, on their own time. Volunteers also attend events and help to conduct them. Events include speaking engagements, home dedications, tabling events in the community, and more.

Community Engagement – Secretary – The Community Engagement Committee is seeking a secretary. This role involves attending each meeting, taking notes, typing notes, and emailing them to the appropriate committee members. The committee meets as needed while going through the selection process. Meetings are typically held once a month on a Thursday at 1 pm at the Habitat for Humanity office in New London.

Faith Engagement – Ambassador – The Faith Engagement committee is seeking volunteers to be ambassadors. This role works to build relationships with congregations in our service area. Committee members attend monthly meetings held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 1:30 pm at our office in New London. Committee members work to identify faith partners, gain knowledge of their past involvement with Habitat, reach out to them to build a relationship, meet with them, invite them to events and work to engage the congregation. Committee members can also schedule speaking engagements with their partner congregations to educate on the Habitat program.

Family Selection – The family selection committee meets every three weeks, as needed, to review applications for those applying to the program. The committee members review both pre-qualification and full applications. They also conduct home visits and make recommendations to the board for families to be approved. Family selection is based on organization policy. Meetings are held on the third Friday of the month at 11am via Zoom.

Family Support Committee – The family support committee is seeking volunteers to partner and mentor families currently in the Habitat Program. Supporting a family means meeting with the family monthly, helping them to develop plans to accomplish goals, such as finishing sweat equity, paying down debt, and attending their required training. This person attends Family Support meetings on the 3rd Monday of each month at 5:30 at our office in New London.

Fundraising Committee – The fundraising committee works to plan and execute fundraisers and events to support the mission of Habitat. The committee meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 at the office in New London.
