Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut accepting applications for homes in Danielson, Willimantic, and Norwich May 1st through 31st.

The Habitat program is a long-term housing solution that empowers people to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.

Eastern Connecticut (May 1, 2021) – At Habitat, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. Our homeownership program provides an opportunity to move from substandard housing into homeownership with an affordable mortgage. Applications are being accepted in May for homes in Danielson, Norwich, and Willimantic.

“Being an informed participant in the process requires that applicants review our online Applicant Information Meeting to learn about the program. There are four steps in the application process and learning about what is being offered is step one,” says Terri O’Rourke, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut (HFHECT). “Our program is a long-term housing solution that empowers people to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.”

By reviewing the online information, interested applicants will learn HFHECT’s guidelines and requirements for becoming a partner to purchase a Habitat home. Completing step one online begins the process of determining eligibility for the program. Habitat’s program is available to households earning 50% or less of the area median income. In general, applicants must be living in substandard housing, be able to afford a mortgage, and be willing to partner with HFHECT.

If accepted, the applicant must contribute “sweat equity” hours working with staff and volunteers constructing their new home and the homes of others, as well as attending trainings and other Habitat events. When the home is completed the partner family is then responsible for making affordable monthly payments for the mortgage, taxes, and insurance, and for their home maintenance. The principal payments are reinvested into the program and allow future applicants to realize the same opportunity. HFHECT provides training, counseling, and support throughout the program.

Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut offers equal housing opportunities and does not discriminate by race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin. We screen the sex-offender registry and perform criminal background checks on all applicants.

About Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut

Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut (HFHECT) was founded in 1987. Habitat homeowners earn 50% or less of the area median income and invest hundreds of hours of sweat equity to help build their homes. They then buy their homes with a no-profit, affordable mortgage financed by the organization or the USDA. Their mortgage payments are re-invested into our program to build more homes, and the property taxes they pay to fund local services like schools, waste management, and parks and recreation. HFHECT has housed 95 families across Eastern Connecticut since its founding and aims to house five families each year.
