together, we build stability

We build more than just homes - we build homeowners. Just like a strong foundation supports a home, we help lay the groundwork for a stable future.

impacts of homeownership

How does a home change everything? From school grades to health, finances to civic engagement, homeownership delivers big social wins: better academic performance, stronger community participation, lower crime, and healthier lives. In fact, 92 % of our homeowners say their lives are better since moving in—and 89 % of them credit Habitat “completely” or “a lot” for that transformation.

74%

of Habitat homeowners had their overall health improve since moving into their home.

Thanks to their affordable mortgages, families who partner with Habitat have the ability to prioritize investing in their families’ health and wellness.

400%

higher is the average net wealth of U.S. homeowners compared to renters.

Habitat partners with families to lower barriers to affordable homeownership and create opportunities for those who may not otherwise have access to owning a home, enabling them to grow their net wealth through forced savings and property value appreciation.

19%

more children of homeowners graduate high school than children of renters.

Habitat offers families stability through shelter, which benefits children through consistency in schooling and minimized disruptions to their education. Homeowners can also leverage their housing wealth to finance post-secondary education for their children.

1.3x

more likely that homeowners will become involved in a neighborhood group or civic association.

Habitat requires future homeowners who partner with us to contribute “sweat equity” by volunteering a certain number of hours on a build site which helps contribute to the sense of community among homeowners.

12.4%

is the average first-year reduction in total energy costs after weatherization.

Habitat builds new homes sustainably, using green building techniques and materials that increase the efficiency and durability of the home and use less resources. Many homes are Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, and Energy Star certified.

30%

is the maximum portion of total income that Habitat homeowners ever pay for housing.

Habitat is committed to providing low- and moderate-income households the opportunity for affordable homeownership because we believe everyone deserves a stable place to call home.

looking ahead

Our 2023–28 Strategic Plan commits us to:

  • A rolling two-year project pipeline that keeps acquisition, design, permitting, funding, construction and sales in constant motion.
  • Building 8–12 energy-efficient homes each year—sold at no profit to qualifying, low-income families who partner with us
  • Providing affordable, low- or no-interest mortgages and on-going home repair/age-in-place support so families can stay secure in their homes.
  • Diversifying and strengthening revenue—from grants, donations, ReStore operations and mortgage repayments—to sustain and grow our mission
  • Deepening community partnerships (USDA, municipalities, faith groups), expanding advocacy, and mobilizing volunteers as the “hearts, hands & voices” for affordable homeownership.

As Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut, we’re more energized than ever. With every home we hand over and every family we partner with, we build stability—not just houses—so that tomorrow’s generations can thrive.
